Play Bell: A Playful Display Font That Brings Handmade Designs to Life

Designing with Play Bell: A Maker’s Story

I was halfway through designing a set of holiday candle labels when I stumbled upon Play Bell. I needed something cheerful but not overly whimsical—something that could stand out on a small sticker but still feel elegant enough for a boutique packaging design. As I typed out “Spiced Apple” in Play Bell, the letters seemed to dance across the screen. The font has a lightness and bounce that immediately caught my eye, and I knew it would resonate with customers browsing my handmade candle collection.

What Makes Play Bell Stand Out?

Play Bell is a decorative display font with a distinct personality. It’s not meant for long paragraphs or body text, but rather for short, impactful phrases—perfect for labels, product names, greeting cards, and branding headers. The font carries a modern yet slightly nostalgic charm, blending soft curves with playful angles. It’s versatile enough to feel at home in a rustic farmhouse sign or a minimalist planner page. Whether you’re creating digital printables or physical product packaging, Play Bell adds a touch of character that’s hard to ignore.

Bringing Play Bell Into Real Projects

I first used Play Bell on a set of wedding invitation mockups for a client who wanted a mix of elegance and fun. The font worked beautifully for the couple’s names and event date, giving the design a unique flair without overpowering the overall aesthetic. I paired it with a clean sans serif for the body text, which balanced the design and made it easy to read. Later, I used the same font for a line of boutique gift tags. The letters cut cleanly on my Cricut machine, and the finished tags looked polished and professional.

Where Play Bell Shines

Because of its decorative nature, Play Bell is ideal for:

It works especially well when you want the text itself to be part of the design—like on a farmhouse sign or a boutique packaging label. Just keep in mind that due to its stylized form, Play Bell is best used for short phrases, titles, or accent text rather than lengthy content.

Readability and Real-World Use

When using Play Bell on physical items like stickers or printed cards, I always test the font at actual size before printing in bulk. On small stickers or tags, some of the more delicate strokes can get lost, especially if you're using a cutting machine like a Silhouette or Cricut. Adjusting the size or spacing can make a big difference in clarity. For digital mockups, I zoom in to make sure the lettering remains crisp and legible in listing images and preview graphics.

Font Pairing Tips for Designers

One of the joys of using a decorative font like Play Bell is experimenting with font pairings. Here are a few combinations I’ve used successfully:

  1. With a clean sans serif – Great for digital templates and planner pages where readability is key.
  2. Alongside a simple serif – Perfect for wedding stationery and formal invitations.
  3. Paired with a script font – Adds a layered, hand-lettered feel to greeting cards and wall art.
  4. Next to a bold display font – Ideal for contrast in boutique tags and seasonal signs.

Play Bell holds its own in a design, so I usually let it be the star while keeping supporting fonts simple and understated.

Checking Font Features Before You Sell

Before I use Play Bell in any product I plan to sell—whether it's a digital template, SVG file, or printable—I double-check the font’s license. It’s important to confirm that it includes commercial use rights so I can confidently offer my designs to customers. I also check what font styles are included, such as ligatures, alternates, and swashes, which can add variety and customization to my projects. Most importantly, I verify that the font supports multiple languages and comes in formats compatible with design software like Adobe Illustrator, Canva, Silhouette Studio, and Cricut Design Space.

How Play Bell Elevates Your Brand

Using a consistent typeface like Play Bell across your product line helps build brand recognition. When customers see that familiar, playful lettering on a candle label or a tote bag tag, it reinforces your creative identity. It also helps your products stand out in a crowded marketplace—whether you’re listing on Etsy, selling at a local craft fair, or offering digital downloads. The font’s charm and versatility make it a great tool for connecting with your audience on an emotional level, especially when you’re creating items meant to bring joy, warmth, or a touch of whimsy.

Designing with Purpose and Personality

As a maker, I’m always looking for design elements that help tell a story—whether it’s through a custom candle label or a seasonal printable. Play Bell gives my work a sense of personality and intention. It’s not just a font; it’s a design asset that adds value to the final product. Whether I’m printing labels for a new line of soaps or designing a digital greeting card, Play Bell helps bring my vision to life in a way that feels authentic and engaging.
