Farmhouse Love: A Display Font That Brings Personality to Web Design
As a web designer always on the lookout for typefaces that can elevate a brand’s digital presence, I recently had the chance to test Farmhouse Love in a real-world project — a boutique online store for a handmade candle brand. From the first mockup, I knew this display font had something special. It’s not just another decorative typeface; it’s a design asset that brings warmth, charm, and authenticity to digital interfaces.
First Impressions: A Hero Section with Heart
The project began with the homepage hero section. I placed “Welcome to Hearth & Wick” in Farmhouse Love, overlaying it on a soft, rustic background image of a wooden table scattered with candles and dried florals. The font’s slightly uneven baseline and playful serifs gave the text a hand-drawn, organic feel that perfectly matched the brand’s aesthetic.
At 48px on desktop and 36px on mobile, the type remained crisp and readable. The spacing between letters felt intentional — not too tight, not too loose — and the lowercase characters had a gentle bounce that added to the overall friendliness of the design. I immediately saw how this font could help small brands connect emotionally with their audience.
Responsive Readability: How Farmhouse Love Performs Across Devices
I tested the font across multiple devices and screen sizes. On desktop, the charm of Farmhouse Love really shines — especially in hero banners and feature sections where space allows the characters to breathe. The font’s unique swashes and ligatures add a touch of elegance without feeling overly ornate.
On mobile, I found it worked best at slightly larger sizes. Anything below 24px started to lose some of its character, and fine details like the small flourishes on the “g” and “y” began to blur together. For call-to-action buttons or section headers on mobile, I recommend using it at 28px or above, especially when placed over images or dark backgrounds.
Font Pairing: Balancing Playfulness with Practicality
One of the most important aspects of using a decorative display font like Farmhouse Love is knowing how to pair it with more functional typefaces. I used it for the headline and paired it with a clean sans serif — specifically, a light-weight Open Sans — for the supporting text and product descriptions.
This combination created a beautiful contrast: the personality of Farmhouse Love drew attention, while the sans serif kept the layout grounded and easy to read. For a more editorial feel, I could also see pairing it with a soft serif like Merriweather for blog headers or testimonial sections.
Use Cases and Limitations: When Farmhouse Love Shines (and When It Doesn’t)
From a web design perspective, Farmhouse Love works best in short, impactful text. I used it for the logo treatment, hero headlines, and category titles like “Hand-Poured Soy Candles” and “Limited Edition Holiday Collection.” Each time, it added a sense of craftsmanship and warmth that aligned with the brand’s values.
However, I wouldn’t recommend it for long-form content, navigation menus, or small interface text. The font’s decorative nature makes it unsuitable for body copy or accessibility-sensitive areas like form labels. It’s also not ideal for very small buttons or dense dashboards where clarity and speed of recognition are crucial.
Technical Considerations: Webfont Performance and Licensing
Before finalizing the font for client use, I checked the included webfont formats and found that Farmhouse Love comes with WOFF and WOFF2 files — which is great for modern browsers and optimized loading. I embedded it using Google Fonts (or a self-hosted option, depending on the site’s performance needs) and saw no issues with rendering or load time.
Licensing is another important point. The font includes a commercial license, which is essential when designing for clients or using it in online stores, landing pages, and digital templates. I always double-check whether the license covers web use, product resale, and printables — and in this case, it did.
